PROCESS

One of our secrets is a manufacturing process

which is possible thanks to our network of skilled craftsmen

Our manufacturing process enhances individual artisan skills through the means of industrial organization. This is possible thanks to a network of skilled craftsmen who have years of experience working every single component of SigeGold products by hand.

Each step in the manufacturing process is carried out entirely by hand. A SigeGold creation is the result of several expert craftsmen who, at different times, work on the individual pieces that are assembled in the last phase of the process. The first step is that of research and design, conducted by the company’s interior designers at our main facility, near Florence.
The research centre examines historical periods, art movements and details from which to draw new designs and collections. All of the work is performed by skilled craftsmen who make up a network that has worked for SigeGold for many years: woodcarvers, glaziers, marquetry workers and decorators, who create the pieces and finishes in their workshops.

This process, which combines centralised organisation and expert artisan skills, is a hallmark of SigeGold, and the secret behind the attention each product receives. This production method makes it possible to greatly customize each piece, creating it from scratch or choosing different finishes and colours than those proposed in the collection.

Woodcarving

The woodcarving phase takes about eight hours for work of medium complexity. The work is performed entirely by hand using a series of tools that are still very similar to those of old Florentine woodworkers.

Inlays

Each inlay is made of sheets of different woods. This stage of work requires great care and finishes by submerging every piece of wood in hot sand to create a worn sheen of warmly-coloured hues. The inlays are made by Tuscan craftsmen who continue to work wood using the same techniques as those of Renaissance Florence.

Decorations

Once again, in situations where decorations are used, an extremely old painting technique is employed. The design is first made on a sheet of transparent paper (pounced), then transferred onto the surface using carbon powder. The motif is then painted, sometimes using the gold leaf technique. And then the result is enriched with finely crafted details and stylings.

Glass work

The fused Murano glass used to decorate doors and furniture is worked entirely by hand. Even the most complex cuts are executed one by one by the artisans, so that each piece is different from the others.

Gilding

The gilding of the frames or decorations of each SigeGold piece is performed solely by hand. To get an effect that is both shiny and antiqued, thin sheets of gold or silver alloy are applied and then placed on the surface using a Marten brush, the only kind able to do so without damaging them. This gold leaf technique is exactly the same as that used during the Renaissance. Once the gilding has been applied, the decorations are finished with mineral oils to provide a warm, antique glow.

Final assembly

This is the last step of the process, and the one in which all the work performed by the craftsmen is completed. The various frames, decorations and glass elements are assembled in a very delicate manner so that the end result adheres to the initial design and at the same time brings out the details of the hand-crafted work. This step is performed by craftsmen inside the company under the supervision of project managers who are familiar with SigeGold’s standards and ensure the utmost quality and aesthetic compliance with these.
